Rottweiler
Also known as: Rottie
Origin: Germany
The Rottweiler is a powerful, loyal guarding breed that has become very popular in India for home protection. Calm and confident when well-raised, a Rottie is devoted to its family but needs firm, kind training and early socialisation to be a safe companion in an Indian home.
Personality & Traits
How to Care for a Rottweiler in India
- Daily exercise of 60+ minutes — Rottweilers are working dogs and get destructive when bored.
- Start obedience training and socialisation as a puppy; this breed must respect its family.
- Short coat — brush weekly; they shed more than expected.
- Keep lean — Rottweilers are prone to joint problems and obesity worsens it.
- Not a chain-it-outside dog; they need to live with the family.
Indian Climate Tips
The black coat absorbs heat fast — exercise early morning/evening in summer and always provide shade and water. Heat stroke is a real risk for this breed in Indian summers.
Indian Food & Diet
A large-breed diet with enough protein; many owners mix good kibble with home-cooked chicken and rice. Avoid overfeeding — keep the waistline visible to protect the joints.
Common Health Concerns
- Hip & elbow dysplasia
- Heat stress
- Bloat (GDV)
- Heart conditions
