Also known as: Indian Pariah Dog, Desi Dog, Indian Native Dog, INDog
Origin: India
The Indie — short for Indian Native Dog or Indian Pariah Dog — is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, having lived alongside humans on the Indian subcontinent for over 4,500 years. Naturally adapted to Indian climate, food, and cities, the Indie is the healthiest and most low-maintenance dog you can adopt in India.
Indies handle Indian heat, monsoon, and mild winter without trouble. Ear infections during monsoon are the only common climate-related issue — keep ears dry and check weekly.
A mix of rice, dal, ghee, and a protein (egg, chicken, fish, or curd) twice a day. Indies tolerate Indian spice levels far better than imported breeds. Avoid: chocolate, onions, raw bones from cooked meat.
Indies are mentioned in the Mahabharata — Yudhishthira's loyal companion in the final journey was an Indian native dog.
