Pomeranian
Also known as: Pom
Origin: Germany/Poland
The Pomeranian is a tiny, fox-faced toy dog with a big personality and a famously fluffy double coat. Hugely popular in Indian cities, the 'Pom' is lively, affectionate and bold — but needs careful heat management and grooming in the Indian climate.

How to Care for a Pomeranian in India
- Short walks plus indoor play are enough — but they still need activity to stay happy.
- Brush the double coat several times a week; never shave it (it protects against heat and sun).
- Dental care is critical — toy breeds get gum disease easily.
- Handle gently; their small frame injures easily from jumps and falls.
- Train against excessive barking from puppyhood.
Indian Climate Tips
The dense coat makes heat the biggest risk — keep Poms in cool, fan/AC rooms during summer, walk only in the cool hours, and watch for heavy panting.
Indian Food & Diet
Small portions of high-quality food; home food works in tiny amounts. Their fast metabolism means small frequent meals suit them, but obesity is still common — measure portions.
Common Health Concerns
- Dental disease
- Patellar luxation
- Tracheal collapse
- Heat stress

Pomeranians were once much larger sled dogs; Queen Victoria popularised the toy-sized version after falling in love with a small Pom in the 1800s.
