Also known as: Rose-ringed Parakeet, Tota
Origin: Indian subcontinent
The Indian Ringneck — known across India as the 'Tota' — is one of the smartest and most talkative parrots you can keep. Native to India, they're perfectly adapted to local climate. Note: it is illegal under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 to keep wild-caught Indian Ringnecks. Captive-bred birds with paperwork are legal.
Native — handles Indian climate naturally. Provide shade and water in summer.
Pellets + fresh produce: papaya, apple, spinach, capsicum, carrot. Skip avocado (toxic to birds), chocolate, caffeine.
The Indian Ringneck is mentioned in the Panchatantra (3rd century BCE) as a learned, talking bird in royal courts. India has had pet parrots for at least 2,300 years.
