Indian Spitz 🇮🇳 Indian breed
Also known as: Spitz, German Spitz
Origin: India (from German Spitz)
The Indian Spitz is a small, fluffy, white companion dog that was hugely popular across India in the 1980s–90s and remains a beloved family pet. Developed in India from the German Spitz to suit the local climate, it is hardy, alert and far more heat-tolerant than it looks.
Personality & Traits
How to Care for a Indian Spitz in India
- Modest exercise needs — a couple of short walks and indoor play are enough.
- The double coat needs brushing 2-3 times a week to prevent matting and manage shedding.
- Trim around the eyes and paws; bathe once a month.
- Prone to barking — train early to control alert-barking.
- Great first dog and apartment dog for Indian families.
Indian Climate Tips
Despite the fluffy coat, the Indian Spitz was bred to handle Indian heat better than imported fluffy breeds — but still keep it cool, brushed and hydrated in peak summer.
Indian Food & Diet
Does well on home-cooked Indian food — rice, dal, curd, egg and a little chicken — in small portions. Avoid overfeeding; small breeds gain weight easily.
Common Health Concerns
- Dental issues
- Patellar luxation
- Skin/coat problems if under-groomed
- Obesity

The Indian Spitz is often confused with the Pomeranian, but it is larger, hardier, and was specifically adapted for the Indian climate.
