Bakharwal Dog 🇮🇳 Indian breed
Also known as: Kashmiri Sheepdog, Bakarwal Mastiff
Origin: Jammu & Kashmir, India
The Bakharwal is an ancient livestock-guardian breed reared by the nomadic Bakarwal and Gujjar shepherds of the Pir Panjal range in Kashmir. A large, hardy, fiercely protective dog, it has guarded flocks against predators for centuries and is sadly now considered endangered.
Personality & Traits
How to Care for a Bakharwal Dog in India
- Needs space and real activity — a working guardian, not a city pet.
- Socialise and train early and consistently given the strong guarding drive.
- Thick coat needs regular brushing, especially in shedding season.
- Best in cool, open, rural settings.
- Experienced, active owners only.
Indian Climate Tips
Adapted to the cold mountains of Kashmir, the Bakharwal does best in cool climates and finds the heat of the plains very difficult — provide shade, water and cool spaces if kept in warmer regions.
Indian Food & Diet
Traditionally fed a vegetarian/dairy-leaning shepherd diet of roti, milk and grains, supplemented with protein. Feed generously for its size; keep it lean and muscular.
Common Health Concerns
- Heat stress in warm climates
- Hip dysplasia
- Tick-borne disease
- Joint issues
Did you know?
The Bakharwal is one of India's oldest breeds and is considered endangered today, as fewer nomadic shepherds maintain the traditional herding lifestyle.
