How to train a puppy: a beginner's guide for India
Training a puppy is about building trust and good habits early, using rewards rather than punishment. Start the day your puppy comes home — a few short, positive sessions a day go a long way and prevent most behaviour problems later.
Toilet training
Take your puppy out (or to its toilet spot) first thing in the morning, after every meal, after naps and before bed. The moment it goes in the right place, praise and reward immediately. Accidents are normal — clean them without scolding, as punishment only teaches the puppy to hide. Consistency and a routine are what make it click, usually within a few weeks.
Basic commands and biting
Teach 'sit', 'come' and 'stay' with tiny treats and a happy voice, keeping sessions to a few minutes. For play-biting, yelp 'ouch' and stop play for a moment so the puppy learns that biting ends the fun, then redirect to a chew toy. Never hit a puppy — it damages trust and creates fear-based problems.
Socialisation is the secret
Between roughly 8 and 16 weeks, gently expose your puppy to new people, sounds, surfaces and (vaccinated, healthy) dogs so it grows up confident, not fearful. In India that means car horns, doorbells, the broom, different floors and friendly visitors. A well-socialised puppy becomes a calm, easy adult dog.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to toilet train a puppy?
With a consistent routine and reward-based training, most puppies are largely toilet trained within a few weeks, though occasional accidents continue until about 5–6 months.
Should I punish my puppy for accidents or biting?
No. Punishment creates fear and hiding. Reward the behaviour you want and redirect the behaviour you don't — positive methods work far better.
When should puppy socialisation start?
The key window is roughly 8–16 weeks. Expose your puppy safely to new people, sounds and vaccinated dogs during this time for a confident adult.
