No. Onion and garlic are toxic to dogs, and this is the single most important thing to know about feeding a dog in India — because they are in almost everything we cook. Sabzi, dal tadka, biryani, gravy, pakora masala, most leftovers. There is no safe serving size to aim for.
Why
Onions, garlic, shallots, leeks and spring onions all belong to the allium family, which contains compounds that damage a dog's red blood cells and can lead to anaemia. Cooking, drying and powdering do not remove the risk — onion or garlic powder is actually more concentrated than the fresh vegetable. The damage is cumulative, so a little gravy every day is a real hazard rather than a harmless habit, and smaller dogs are affected by smaller amounts.
What to watch for
Signs can take a few days to appear: unusual tiredness, weakness, pale or white gums, rapid breathing, reddish-brown urine, vomiting or loss of appetite. If your dog has eaten a meaningful amount of onion or garlic — or you find they've been getting gravy regularly — call your vet or the nearest 24/7 emergency hospital straight away. Don't wait for symptoms and don't try any home remedy. Tell them roughly how much was eaten and when.
